Understanding Hemorrhoids and Hemorrhoidectomy
What are hemorrhoids (Piles)?
Hemorrhoids, commonly known as piles, are swollen and inflamed veins located in the lower part of your rectum and anus.
Hemorrhoids are often caused by increased pressure in the lower rectum due to factors such as chronic constipation or diarrhea, straining during bowel movements, prolonged sitting, pregnancy, obesity, and a low-fiber diet.
- Internal Hemorrhoids: These develop inside the rectum and are usually not visible or palpable from the outside. They are typically painless but may cause bleeding during bowel movements.
- External Hemorrhoids: These develop under the skin around the anus. They can cause itching, pain, and sometimes bleeding as blood clots.
- Prolapsed Hemorrhoids: Internal hemorrhoids that enlarge and protrude outside the anal sphincter. These can be painful and may bleed.
