Hemorrhoidectomy is usually performed under general anesthesia. The anesthesiologist will discuss the best option for you.
Many hemorrhoidectomies can be performed as a day-case procedure, meaning you go home the same day. Some patients, or those undergoing more extensive surgery, may require an overnight stay for pain management and observation.
Full recovery can take 2 to 6 weeks, or sometimes longer, for complete comfort. Most people can return to light activities and desk work within 1-2 weeks, but strenuous activities should be avoided for 3-4 weeks or as advised by your surgeon.
If you have a closed hemorrhoidectomy, absorbable sutures are typically used, which dissolve on their own and do not require removal.
The surgeon will prescribe stool softeners and recommend a high-fiber diet and plenty of fluids to make bowel movements as soft and easy as possible. Taking pain medication about 30 minutes before attempting a bowel movement can also help.
A sitz bath involves sitting in a shallow basin of warm water for 10-15 minutes. It helps to relieve pain, reduce swelling, and keep the anal area clean after surgery. They are typically recommended several times a day and after each bowel movement.
