Understanding Scars, Aftercare Instructions & Recovery with a Male Chest
While a Double Incision Mastectomy results in linear scars across the chest, our surgeons at WIH International Hospital employ meticulous surgical techniques to ensure these scars are placed strategically to be as discreet as possible and mature well over time. Many patients find that scars fade significantly and become a powerful symbol of their journey to authenticity.
Aftercare Instructions & Initial Recovery:
Your recovery is a vital part of achieving optimal results. Our team will provide detailed post-operative care instructions to ensure a smooth and effective healing process:
Compression Binder: You will typically wear a compression binder or vest continuously for several weeks (usually 4-6) to reduce swelling, minimize fluid accumulation, and help the skin adhere smoothly to the underlying chest muscles.
Drains: Small, temporary surgical drains may be placed to prevent fluid buildup (seroma). Our nursing staff will teach you how to manage them, and they are usually removed within 1-2 weeks by your surgeon.
Pain Management: Discomfort is normal. You will be prescribed pain medication to manage any post-operative soreness.
Wound Care & Nipple Grafts: Meticulous care of the incision lines and free nipple grafts is essential. Our team will guide you on cleaning, dressing changes, and protecting the grafts to ensure optimal healing and “take.”
Rest and Activity Restrictions: Prioritize rest. Avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and raising your arms above shoulder height for the initial few weeks (typically 4-6 weeks) to prevent stress on incisions and ensure proper healing.
